I think it has something to do with lack of expectation, which goes hand-in-hand with the inability to imagine any possibilities other than 'If I win the lottery...'

In terms of escaping the money grind, I'm afraid I don't see much hope other than a sudden and unexpected windfall such as you mention.

I truly believe that having to slave away for money is killing the creativity of countless human beings who would otherwise be enriching our civilization with artistic contributions, if only they were not grinding away at a thankless job for just enough to not be evicted for nonpayment of rent or the like.

Then again, I'm a facist with an arrogant sense of "I could do this better, I just need an army to hold off the morons for long enough to prove it."
