Is that some sort of combing box?

It's a wool picker. What it basically does is open up the locks of fleece to prepare them for carding or spinning. I can tease several pounds of fleece an hour, which would take me many hours to do by hand. It's a really handy and efficient device. It also does a good job of looking scary and impressive with all the big teeth.

This picker was rescued from a friend's Mom's barn. We guess it had been out there 5 - 10 years, fairly exposed to the elements. When I received the unit, it was in sad, sad shape. The wood was parched and faded, and all the metal parts were rusted. It really looked like it should just be thrown on the scrap heap. I refurbished the whole thing with some help from Mr. Charlie, and now it works like a dream.

It looks brand new in the pictures. Seems like a very useful thing to have.

Thanks *smile* I spent a bit of time sanding it down, removing rust, and getting it back into working shape. It was a great find - the new ones are pricey.

hardcore yarn porn!

glad to see you wearing gloves, that thing probably doesn't feel very nice if you're not paying attention!

The gloves are *really* important, as the teeth are veeery sharp. When I was refurbing this machine I got a couple of bites. The fiber gods occasionally require a blood sacrifice when you're working with the big tools ;)

A second on the gloves, here, that thing looks hungry! :-) Cool pictures, I find all of this process just fascinating.

You wouldn't happen to have any before pictures from before you refurbished it, would you?

Yes, gloves are very important. A slip could do some serious damage to my hand.

Unfortunately I don't have any before pics. It was so weathered and bleached out there wasn't anyway to even tell parts of it are walnut. I had to do 4 series of sanding and finishing because the wood soaked up so much sealer. A little elbow grease works wonders *smile*
