Life is simple really...
... ya just have to remember a few basic truths.

- generally people neither mean what they say nor say what they mean. Saying something in the moment is fine, but brass tacks is an entirely different matter. Just realize they are being 'nice' or 'polite' and move on - it's safer.

- people will tell you an easy lie rather than a hard truth.

- don't assume.

- blunt communication is best. Misinterpretation is your own damned fault (see beginning of list).

- be polite and gracious, but don't expect that many folks will return the favor.

- same with 'favors'. Only do them because it makes *you* feel good.

- 'Hope springs eternal' is one of the stupidist things ever said, because it's pretty pointless. Doesn't really get you anywhere - only hard work and pragmatism (and occasionally some ass-kissing) do.

- they don't really care.

- complete self-reliance is the only way to go.

- if they don't have time for you then don't bother.

Old dog, new tricks.

The redhead's rules are simple:

#1 No expectations
#2 Actions speak louder than words
#3 You can only count on yourself

y'know, that closely mirrors pretty much my basic philosophy on life. [at least, as far as interaction with other humans is concerned.] but my husband has always indicated that this is cynical and it makes him sad. he feels that my unwillingness to rely on others for anything vital is robbing me of something.

whatever it is, I don't know. In my neighborhood, these attitudes were called Learning From Your Mistakes. Or, Common Sense for short.

Common Sense is far more rare than those of us who possess it might think.

Lemme guess - you're one of the Responsible Ones too?

to a fault. i'm recovering, though - trying to become Moderately Responsible. you know; responsible, but not to the extent where it's frivolous to pursue happiness and all that.

ah - Moderately Responsible. A lofty goal *smile*

I'm working on that too - just the other day I bought myself some stuff at Ann Taylor. Of course, it was work clothes 60% off... *sigh*

I had an interesting conversation with a friend regarding being one of the Responsible Ones / Dependable Ones and trying to be spontaneous and occasionally unpredictable. Being *gasp* selfish and buying yourself a toy or somesuch. It's hard...
