I consider myself polyamorous when single. Part of that, for me, is I don't expect to give up the warm, friendly fuck-buddy interactions I have should I find someone I want to have a relationship with.

However, if you view polyamory as purely behaviorial, then only people who are actively having multiple relationships are poly. Actually, this works well not for defining others (which is often in poor taste), but for defining oneself.

wonder why anyone would even think that poly is a state of action rather than a state of mind? :)

Dunno, but they do. I've heard it directed to me more than once. There are a few other things I've heard along those lines, such as wanting a primary isn't poly (guess what sort of people I hear that from), and it always makes me wonder.
