Sometimes it is.

And sometimes it *has* to be, because if it weren't there would be no use in (and therefore no motivation for) 'doing the right thing'.

and sometimes, if virtue just isn't rewarding enough, then you have religion - wherein virtue is sold as the answer to prevent eternal hellfire and brimstone.

generally, though, i tend to feel that if the only thing preventing me from doing something is a threat, that just isn't good enough. :\ it should be, at times. damn this impulsive, hard-headed streak.
